“I will fight to earn my place. That’s my dream. I will stay at Real Madrid, I will succeed here. I know that the club received an €85m (£71m) bid for me, but I’m not leaving.”

Earlier this week Zidane warned James that he can’t guarantee him place in the starting-11.

“The idea with James is the same as with everyone else – he’s a Real Madrid player. I’m not going to tell you that James is a starter. He’s an important player. We’ll see what happens this year, I have a big squad and it’s complicated. I have to play the most competitive side I can and I’ll do the same thing this season, that’s my responsibility.’

While according to transfer website Sport witness, Real Madrid are looking to offload Mateo Kovacic to raise fund for the summer spending, with Everton and Liverpool are keen on a  player.

“The club are expecting incomings, but also several outgoings, which will raise Zinedine Zidane extra transfer window spending money.

“One of those players who is firmly in the ‘sellable’ bracket is Mateo Kovacic. The 22 year old only signed for Real Madrid a year ago, leaving Inter Milan as they once again worked to balance the books.

“Kovacic hasn’t been prominent at Real Madrid, with Spanish newspaper saying his period at the club has been ‘bittersweet’, but it’s worth remembering that despite Kovacic having bags of experience, he’s still a young player.”
