Cristiano Ronaldo has clarified that he was referring to the fitness level of his teammates, not the individual quality, following 1-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid.
In his post match interview Portuguese said: “If everyone had my level, we’d be first. Every year, according to the Press, it seems I’m rubbish, but the numbers and statistics don’t lie,” he said, Marca reports.
“I don’t want to disparage anyone, any teammate, but when the best aren’t there it’s difficult to win. I like playing with Pepe, with Karim [Benzema], with [Gareth] Bale, with Marcelo.

“I don’t mean Jese, Lucas [Vazquez], [Mateo] Kovacic aren’t good, they’re very good, but…
“I don’t know if it was poor preparation in the first half of the season but we’re having a lot of injuries and that hurts us.
“We had more chances and we deserved to win but football is like that.”
Ronaldo had to backtrack and clarify his remarks: “When I spoke, I was referring to my physical level, not as a player,” he told Radio Marca.

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi thinks they were the deserved winners in Saturday’s encounter.
The team played the game they had to play, with hope and compact at the back,” he said, AS reports.
