“No,’ he said. ‘They were lucky. They came to defend. They waited for their chance and in the end they got it. We deserved to go to the quarter-final. We deserved the win more than them. We were much the better team.’

Corluka said that Ronlado found it difficult to play in a defensive setup, and Portugal hasn’t done enough to regarded as favorite to win Euros.

“To be honest Ronaldo found it difficult to play because they defended all the game,” Corluka added.

“I feel pretty bad because I think when you look at the game we were the much better team. We just didn’t score and they did. We lost the ball and it was a lucky shot from Nani. He didn’t know where to go with the ball. They were just lucky.

“We are disappointed because we knew this was the biggest chance of a generation. I cannot say anything against the team, against the players. They gave it all. We deserved to go through.

“We’re a little bit sad but what can you do? Life goes on. It’s football and that’s why everyone watches.’

When you believe in something you are closer to achieving it,’ said Cedrid Soares. ‘Our team believes very much that we can achieve something here. That’s the most important thing.

“We were very intelligent against Croatia, the way we played the game. We were cold and when the chance came we scored.

“We were well prepared and that was the key. Our strategy was strong. We fought for the goal. In all games we have fought until the end. We waited for the mistake and in the end we scored one goal and it was a fantastic, amazing feeling.

“All the heads are high. Everybody is motivated. We look forward to the next game.
