Zenden: this defeat damaged Rafael Benitez

Boudewijn Zenden feels Real Madrid 4-0 loss in the El-clasico damaged  Rafael Benitez‘s position, and could cost him his job.

Real Madrid’s heavy defeat against their bitter rivals Barcelona  was hard to digest for Bernabeu faithful, who was already not happy with the appointment of Spaniard as the head coach of club. In the aftermath of the clasico hammering , Real Madrid fans lost their calm and called for Benitez’s sacking.

Former Barcelona and Holland player Zenden believes that defeat in clasico largely impact the downfall of former Liverpool boss, however he thinks, criticism on Rafael Benitez is unjust.  Boudewijn Zenden argued  if Spaniard set up his side defensively, than how it is possible that Real Madrid has scored most goals in the La-Liga this season. Speaking to Omnisport, he said

Madrid are driven by results and the defeat to Barca will haunt him for quite some time.”

“It makes it hard for any manager. He has to close the gap to Barcelona.

“Benitez teams look defensive but how can he be defensive if he’s scored the most goals [in La Liga] this season?

“He works the players tactically and makes them solid as a unit.”

Zenden has experience to working with current Real Madrid boss, when Spaniard was interim manger at the Chelsea as he was appointed  as the short-term successor of Roberto Di Matteo in November 2012 and faced the wrath of Blues fans

“It was a deeply unpopular move with Chelsea supporters but Benitez managed to guide the club to Champions League qualification and glory in the Europa League.

“We won the Europa League and did well in the league,” Zenden added.

“Defeat in the Club World Cup [final, 1-0 to Corinthians] was disappointing.

“Fixture congestion was a nightmare. He did well despite no-one wanting him there.”
