Fabio Capello explains why Real Madrid were wrong to replace Carlo Ancelotti with Rafa Benitez

Former Los Blancos manager Fabio Capello says Florentino Perez made a huge mistake by replacing Carlo Ancelotti with Rafa Benitez, as it was traumatic for Real Madrid.

Capello was asked about the situation of Real Madrid, during his interview with Spanish newspaper AS, following the sacking of  Rafa Benitez, and he also asked about the club’s decision to appoint Zinedine Zidane as Spaniard successor.

“I don’t know why [Benitez didn’t succeed]. You have to be in the locker room,” Capello said when questioned about the ex-boss.

“If there’s no connection [between the players and the Coach] it’s difficult to succeed. Benitez has experience…It’s possible changing from Ancelotti to Benitez was too traumatic.”

I always had a sporting director. The Coach makes the signings now, right? Normally that’s the case. If the team is decided by the President…”
